Does Rain Make My Windows Dirty?

By Noah Johnson, Alternative Window Cleaning ·

Rain-spotted windows on a cloudy day in Johnson County, Kansas

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners in Olathe, Overland Park and Leawood: “We just had our windows cleaned — will the rain ruin them?” Or the opposite: “It rained last week and now my windows look worse than ever. Why?”

The short answer: rain itself isn’t what makes your windows dirty. Rainwater is actually fairly pure when it falls. The spots and streaks you see after a storm come from what the rain picks up on the way down — and from what was already sitting on your glass.

Why windows look dirtier after it rains

When raindrops hit a window that already has a film of dust, pollen or pollution on it, the water mixes with that grime. As the drops dry, the dirt is left behind in little circles and streaks. The rain didn’t bring the dirt — it just rearranged what was already there and made it more visible.

A few other things make it worse:

  • Dirty frames and screens. Rain runs down dirty frames, sills and screens and carries that grime onto the glass below.
  • Splash-back. On lower windows, heavy rain splashes mulch, soil and debris from flowerbeds up onto the glass.
  • Overflowing gutters. When gutters are clogged, water pours over the edge in sheets, often right down the face of your windows, carrying roof grit and decomposed leaves with it.
  • Airborne dust and pollen. In Kansas City, spring storms often arrive right in the middle of pollen season. That yellow film on your car? It’s on your windows too.

Rain vs. sprinklers: the real culprit in Johnson County

If you’re seeing hard, white spots that don’t wipe off, rain probably isn’t to blame. That’s usually hard water from lawn sprinklers. Kansas City-area tap water is hard — it carries calcium and magnesium — and when sprinklers spray your windows, those minerals dry right onto the glass.

Unlike rain spots, mineral deposits can bond to the glass over time and eventually etch it permanently. We see this constantly in Leawood, Overland Park and Olathe neighborhoods with irrigation systems. The fix is to adjust sprinkler heads away from the house and have the spots professionally removed before they set.

Does clean glass hold up better in the rain?

Yes. A properly cleaned window has nothing on it for raindrops to grab onto, so water tends to run off and dry with far fewer spots. That’s one reason we use a water-fed pole system with purified water for exterior glass — purified water has no minerals in it, so it dries spot-free and leaves nothing behind for the next rain to stick to.

In other words, the cleaner your windows are when it rains, the cleaner they’ll stay after it rains.

Should you clean windows before or after rainy season?

In Kansas City, spring brings both pollen and storms. Many of our customers book a cleaning in late spring, after the heaviest pollen has dropped, and again in fall after the leaves are down. That timing gets you the longest stretch of clear glass.

And don’t worry if rain is in the forecast on your appointment day. Light rain doesn’t hurt purified-water window cleaning — in fact, overcast days are great for cleaning because the glass doesn’t dry too fast in direct sun. We only reschedule for heavy storms, lightning or high winds.

How to keep your windows cleaner between visits

  1. Keep gutters clear. Overflowing gutters are one of the biggest causes of streaky windows. (We can clean your gutters in the same visit.)
  2. Adjust your sprinklers so they don’t hit the house.
  3. Add a layer of mulch or rock under low windows to reduce splash-back.
  4. Clean screens once or twice a year. Dirty screens drip grime onto clean glass every time it rains.
  5. Schedule regular professional cleaning — twice a year for most homes.

The bottom line

Rain doesn’t make your windows dirty — dirt does. Rain just shows it to you. Keep your glass, screens and gutters clean, keep sprinklers off the house, and your windows will look great through every Kansas storm.

Frequently asked questions

Does rain clean windows?

Not really. Rain can rinse off loose dust, but it usually mixes with existing grime and leaves spots behind as it dries.

Why are there white spots on my windows after it rains?

Hard white spots are usually mineral deposits from lawn sprinklers, not rain. They should be removed before they etch the glass.

Can you clean windows when it’s raining?

Light rain and overcast days are fine for purified-water window cleaning. We reschedule only for heavy storms, lightning or high winds.
